FREYA Frontman Wants People To Buy Products That Were Not Tested On Animals
June 22, 2007Underground Video Television (UVTV) recently conducted an interview with FREYA/ex-EARTH CRISIS frontman Karl Beuchner about ideas and concept for the new FREYA album, some of the history of the band, his work and associations with PETA and the music video FREYA just completed.
Speaking about the changing lineup and sound of FREYA, Karl explained, "We've had some lineup changes. On the first CD, 'As the Last Light Drains', our rhythm guitarist Darian Lizotte also sang with me. So we divided out the vocal duties. He went to California and continued on with a band called JET CRASH that he started when he was here [in Syracuse]. So we kept everything going. The release which set things up for 'Lift the Curse' was the HOODS/FREYA split. That's where we evolved the sound we have now. So it's drastically different for people who haven't heard the first release. There's some that's more melodic, like 'Lilith'. But it's more fun for me to do what I'm best at, which is what 'Lift the Curse' is."
Karl also talked about his work with PETA and how some of the PETA videos are harsh, including the one put together for the FREYA track "Struggle To Survive". Karl stated, "It should be hard for people to watch. And hopefully it will motivate them to buy products that were not tested on animals. There are cruelty-free alternatives out there. So hopefully it will be a motivating factor for someone to become vegetarian or vegan or at least stop buying products that were tested on animals. That's the point of the video. It's not to be shocking or grotesque. We care about those creatures and we'd like for those experiences to end."
